Fierce floods in Italy have killed an elderly woman and two people are missing, authorities said Wednesday.

The Marche region on the Adriatic coast was hit Tuesday night by gale-force winds and the most intense rainfall in 40 years and the regional government is asking Rome to declare a state of emergency, Italy’s ANSA news agency reported.
An 85-year-old woman apparently drowned after falling into a river at Venarotta. Her body was found after her daughter reported that she did not return home from church.
A 50-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman were missing after their car was washed away as the Ete Morto River burst its banks in the town of Casette D’Ete.
Dozens of people were saved from their inundated homes in dinghies, and the number evacuated is expected to reach the hundreds.
Blackouts hit many areas, the ENEL utility said, and the Ancona airport was closed because of flooded runways.
